Sustainable Schools initiative
ACS is a member of the Sustainable Schools Initiative which is the Abu Dhabi version of the global Eco Schools program. under the umbrella of the Environmental Agency, SSI provides a structured framework for schools to become more "green." There are 4 components to the process: a green audit, a strong eco-club presence, training and environmentally oriented field trips.
At ACS we have used the framework of SSI to guide thinking on different elements of our program. For example, the data collected by the elementary Roots and Shoots Club about water taps was reported to Dr. Heslip who found funding to get motion sensor taps. This emphasis on data is a critical dimension of the learning component . The Green Audit looks at all aspects of school life.
Each year we aim to submit a progress report to the SSI office to demonstrate what we have done to mitigate our energy, water, waste usage and improve in areas of a more environmentally mindful environment.
